Martrel “Tramatik” Hargrove (right) of Henderson, North Carolina was born February 20th 1991. He has a twin brother, one older brother, two younger brothers, and two older sisters. Martrel lost his mother to cancer at the age of 6, and did not meet his father until he was 13 years old. He got the name Tramatik from traumatic situations that have happened to him growing up. After high school he attended Livingstone College, but left after two years because his grandmother passed away. Martrel wanted to be more around his family. One of his skills besides rapping is drawing. Tramatik used to do comic books but situations caused him to lose them. His first comic book characters name was “Tramatik.” Tramatik’s first mixtape back in the day was called Supervillain, but he never put it on the internet. Everything was recorded on a chat mic around the AOL days.

When I asked him when did he know that he wanted to do music his response was, “I’ve always been a fan of music.” He says that his favorite artists are Lil Wayne, Big Tymers, Eminem, D12, and Ludacris. His favorite mixtape is Young Jeezy, Can’t Ban The Snow Man and his favorite album is Lil Wayne, The Carter 2.

His goal for the year is to make more money than last year. I thought that was a great answer. He says he has been to jail, gotten a criminal record, and people judge him because they see him with tattoos, or prejudge him on the clothes he wears, but one of his accomplishments was having the highest exam scores at his high school, class of 2009.
“People misjudge me, but I wanna show the world what I am capable of. I’m not just doing this, it’s my passion. My word play is nice, and I am confident in myself.”
I asked him what keeps him strong and he said “I feed off knowledge and wisdom. Being around people I can learn from keeps me going.”

Antonyo “Yay” Johnson (left) was born November 15th 1991. He has two older brothers, one younger brother, one older sister, and two younger sisters. His mother is a preacher, and his father stays low key. He attended Northern Vance High School in Henderson, North Carolina. Yay likes to get money, chill, turn up, and work.

It is clear that Yay likes to rap and enjoys music but he says “I don’t want to be commercial.” He immediately made that clear about his sound. His first mixtape was called “745 Crack Muzik” released on DatPiff.com back in 2011. His favorite mixtape is No Ceilings by Lil Wayne and his favorite album is Get Rich or Die Trying. Yay’s goal for the year is to drop a mixtape, turn up for the summer and have his music played in different clubs.

We discussed the music and environment around him. He said “When someone makes a hot song, that should be your motivation!” “I’ma do it too!” He wants the younger generation to know that you don’t have to be a dope boy. Kids don’t want to be “weed niggas” they want to be “dope boys” these days. “When they see me doing music, they wanna do music and I wanna influence them. Use your talent, everybody has one. Hate keeps you strong. People always will have something to say but you have to have ambition.”

Tramatik and Yayo promote parties and like to have a good time while still getting work done. I was great getting to know them! Both of their mixtapes will drop early summer and they will also drop one mixtape together.

Raw and Uncut Hip Hop: DJ Twista – Grind Season / Unsigned Talent (252)

DSC_8738

I like for the people I interview to be in their most comfortable state, that way they are relaxed and ready to converse. I walked in and sat down. I was offered some of the best Kool-Aid ever! Bursting with flavor, I was ready to begin. We began by discussing daily routines to break the ice. DJ Twista likes to smoke every day. I asked his preference. “High grade, no mid! Don’t disrespect me ..hide it!” Clearly he is a supporter of marijuana.

Chryshon Fields was born on March 22, 1986 in Summit, New Jersey near Patterson. He relocated to Rocky Mount, North Carolina in 1999 after it got real rough around the area he was living in. Chryshon grew up on “The Hill” and the Holly Street area. He is a disc jockey that goes by the name DJ Twista. The name Twista comes from the song Slow Jamz. Slow Jamz was the lead single from Twista’s Kamikaze album in 2003 and was also on Kanye West’s debut album The College Drop Out. That was his theme song! He was around 18 when he first started out on the scene. His favorite mixtape that actually made him want to DJ is “60 Mins of Funk Flex.” When I asked him who his favorite artists are he named JayZ, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Memphis Bleek, Max B, and Young Thug. For a personal preference he likes almost all music. Basically anything with a bop. Twista has been an on air personality for Soul 92Jams (92.1FM). He now does drops for mixtapes, promotes DJ mixtapes, A&R, and is the CEO of RunEmUp Entertainment.

Dj Twista has a strong passion for spinning records and music. His father was a professional dancer who owned a strip club. While his father promoted the club with the girls who worked for him, Twista was busy making tapes to play in the club to keep the party going. Being in the street and his father being involved with the club made him want to DJ more.

“The streets made me a DJ. Getting out of the street was the goal.”

Twista’s mood is very cool, calm and collected. He likes money, females, and people who are funny. When I asked him to describe himself he said he is a very down to earth, kind hearted, generous person who is usually feeling good and smiling. “I just stay in my zone.” Being a team player is key and he wants to be with people who are for the team. DJ Twista also expressed that he is a genuine person and the things that he does are done with meaning. He is big on respect and feels it should be a two way street. You get what you give. “What God made you to be is what you should be on this earth!”

There is a project in the works! Independent Savior drops in March 2014. He will feature independent artists on the mixtape. The mixtape will promote those who have a strong work ethic, consistency, grind, love, and support. When I asked Twista about how he felt about the music in the city of Rocky Mount he said “The music speaks for itself”. I felt that was a very good answer.

We reflected on events recently in the city. He said he would like to see a change in Rocky Mount, and more positivity. “Everybody wants to follow, but just be yourself. Be strong at home and don’t be weak. It starts at home!” We also discussed life and I cared to know where he wants to be in ten years. He pretty much said he would like to be remarried, owning a restaurant, a cook, and still pushing RunEmUp Ent.

As far as achievements, DJ Twista’s biggest show was in Canada. He was a DJ for Yung Jock around 2004. For him going to Canada was big because he got the opportunity to do what he loves just off somebody believing in his craft. He keeps busy by rocking these clubs every weekend, take care of his responsibilities, paying bills, doing what he loves, and perfecting his image. The music saved his life.

His message to you: “When I come out, I come out to put on for 252 and make sure people enjoy themselves! I wanna be more like a spokesperson to let people know you don’t have to be a shooter or on that block to live life the way u wanna live! Put God first and everything else will come with it. Take care of one another. It aint about just being positive, take care of one another.”

Unsigned Talent: Cloverdale Rell – (252)

clove

Born June 20, 1986 to George and Gwen, Cloverdale Rell is a rapping talent from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The name Cloverdale Rell comes from his name Gerell and the old neighborhood he grew up in. He also has lived in the neighborhood called Hillsdale.

The Rocky Mount native feels he features the wordplay of an early Jadakiss and has smooth sincerity of Jay-Z or Nas. He can project imagery like Rick Ross or Young Jeezy in his rhymes as well as story telling. Cloverdale grew up heavily into sports such as baseball, basketball, and football. Growing up listening to rap he grew to respect Jay-Z, 2 Pac, Biggie, and Nas. Cloverdale also has an admiration for gospel because that was the only music his mother ever played. Gospel created a sense of soul, but the gangsta radio being played by his brothers gave him a feel of style and street savvy. His father was a military man who on weekends would find himself in and out of every liquor house in town. He says that doesn’t seem like the type of place for a 14-16 year old kid, but he feels it taught him more than a history book ever could.

Cloverdale Rell began rapping at 13 years old, but only took it serous at 16 years old when his peers took notice. He has received local awards for freestyle battles at the American Legion, but never really wanted to settle as just a battle rapper. Almost everyone rapped including his brothers, but no one expected or believed he would be that talented at such a young age. He is always nominated for lyricist, best rap, or new rap artist at the NCUMAs each year. In his raps he expresses freedom with his words by not holding anything back. I see you Cloverdale Rell!
